Yu Wen Chiu's Award-Winning Design Transforms Residential Spaces into Boutique Hotels

Yu Wen Chiu drew inspiration from the natural beauty of the site for Space Stack. The owner's desire for a strong personal style vocabulary led to the incorporation of the surrounding scenery into the interior space. The design simplifies complex space lines and colors, creating a space that is both simple and full of tension. Hidden door panels conceal entrances to the storage room, guest bathroom, and bedroom, further enhancing the sense of mystery and intrigue.

What sets Space Stack apart from other residential projects is its dual function as a vacation home and a gathering place. The owners, known for their hospitality, often host parties, necessitating a design that can accommodate visiting guests. The emphasis on overall space quality, akin to a boutique hotel, ensures a visually refreshing and comfortable design.

The realization of Space Stack involved the use of various materials such as stone, iron, solid wood, glass, mirror, and parquet wood flooring. The main wall of the living room, made of grey marble, accentuates the main visual sense. The luster texture and reflective characteristic of the stone enhance the visual extension and enlarge the sense of space.

The design process involved detailed discussions with the owner and the consideration of future users. Two design alternatives were proposed, with the main difference being the arrangement of the guest rooms. The chosen design provides hotel room specifications such as dressing rooms and bathrooms, making it suitable for overnight accommodation for visiting guests and friends.

The design faced several challenges, including the continuation of natural elements in the bedroom. The client's Indonesian roots inspired the use of stone pieces commonly used in construction as the performance of the bedside façade. The addition of two tailor-made suspended pendant lighting systems creates a soft and warm atmosphere, complementing the rough and primitive aesthetic scene.
